TOTAL SPONSORSHIP COLLECTED BY
THE WSP TEAM FOR
THE BIG WALK: € 3.197,50

What are we doing?

During 2 days, the WSP team will walk the entire perimeter of the Makalali Private Game Reserve. The total distance is 99.6 km and as the reserve is a BIG 5 Game Reserve in South Africa we can only walk in daylight. The start time is sunrise and we finish at sunset on both days.

On average, there is a 30% dropout rate due to the erratic terrain and potential heat (even though it is winter). The original record of co-owner of the Makalali Private Game Reserve, Mike, was broken in 2022 by Siyafunda Wildlife & Conservation employee Kai with a record time of 20 hours 35 minutes. The WSP Team 2022 completed the tour in 20 hours and 50 minutes!

The reason we are doing this BIG Walk is to raise money for the protection and conservation of rhinos. You can contribute by sponsoring our team, or, if you feel fit enough, join our team.

The Program

Are You Fit Enough?!

There are many organizations that claim to push you out of your comfort zone. This challenge is truly NEXT LEVEL! Because we have safety as number 1 value, we don't just take everyone along as a participant for this program. The BIG Walk is a battle of stamina and an assault to your body like you've never experienced before. Both physically and mentally it is a huge attack for all participants.

So make sure you are very well prepared physically by regularly doing long walks of at least 30 km in one go. We also recommend that you work on your flexibility as some sections require climbing over rocks on all fours.

Don't underestimate what it does to you to walk in a BIG 5 area with no fences between you and the animals. During the trip you should always remain vigilant and be aware of your surroundings and stick with one of the guides. Like the group in 2022, you may suddenly be passed by a cheetah or come face to face with a hippo.

If you are convinced that this is really something for you, we would like to invite you to join the  WSP Team for this upcoming BIG Walk 2023 in August 2024.

Why is it necessary to protect rhinos?

"Nobody in the world needs a rhino horn except a rhino."

Every year about 30,000 elephants in Africa, 600 rhinos in South Africa and an increasing number of lions fall victim to poachers. The numbers, especially rhino poaching, have soared in recent years due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent loss of income for many people.

It is a problem that needs to be tackled simultaneously in several areas; culturally, economically, educationally and across continents, to counter both the supply and demand side of poaching.

During our programs you will actively participate in a conservation activity or sponsorship activity. You get the chance to be part of a solution. To be part of the group of people who not only talk about ending poaching and the pet trade, but you play an active role in protecting an (endangered) species in Africa.

Whether it concerns dehorning or placing a transmitter on a rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion or African wild dog; your contribution will save our wildlife so future generations can enjoy seeing all the animals in the wild in freedom.

"You are a force of nature"

Starting in 2017, we have been taking groups of people to the South African bush with our unique programs that aim to reconnect people with nature and have an active impact on wildlife conservation.

We believe that life is an adventure and that we are all capable of having a positive impact on the people around us if we let nature inspire us .
All our expeditions take place in BIG 5 wilderness areas, outside of human-populated environments. We believe that outside our comfort zones and in the wild you really come to life!
